You may be overlooking the best free local resource near you – your public library! I have been a fan of libraries ever since age 6 when I walked out with a stack of 12 books to read. Over the years, I have sporadically dropped in to check out some books as well as movie DVDs and music CDs. I even used the library’s free computers and Internet access when my computer crashed. But it wasn’t until I got a new library card and my librarian told me about their online resources that I found out everything else I’d been missing out on.
My public library card allows me access to loads of materials and information far beyond the library’s physical walls. Not only can I check out books, movies and music CDs from the physical library, I can also download and stream extensive online collections of books, movies, music and magazines without having to leave my house!
What else can I get? Free tickets to local museums, theaters, historical sites, and even the zoo and a music venue. There’s also access to free online courses, legal help, language learning modules, and community resources.
And storytime at the public library? Well it’s not just for kids anymore! At my library, there are the usual storytime and craft sessions for youngsters, but there are also loads of free adult offerings, including legal help, tax preparation assistance, yoga, music concerts, movies, author readings and signings, and lectures.
Have you checked out your local library lately? If not, it’s time to find what free offerings you can take advantage of!
